Time capsule and achievers honoured at Heritage Festival

A time capsule buried more than 25 years ago in Maryborough will be on display, and four new inductees will be honoured in the Walk of Achievers as part of the National Trust Heritage Festival, running from 18 April to 18 May.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the time capsule holds objects from across the Fraser Coast reflecting what was important to our community in 1999.

“Inside are photos of key people and places, brochures from major events, coins, badges, and other memorabilia that help paint a vivid picture of life on the Fraser Coast in 1999,” he said.

“Over the past eight months, our museum team has meticulously examined, catalogued, and preserved the contents so residents and visitors can now view this remarkable snapshot of the past.

“This is a great opportunity to not only see what was important in our region in 1999 but also learn about the process of uncovering, preserving and reflecting on a legacy left for future generations.”

Unearthing the Past: Queens Park Time Capsule is on from 19 April to 18 May from 9:30am – 2pm Tuesday to Sunday at the Bond Store in Maryborough.  Entry is free.

Cr Seymour said the month-long National Trust Heritage Festival is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate local and state-wide heritage.

“For the past 40 years, the National Trust has united communities to honour and explore Australia’s rich heritage through this festival,” he said.

“As part of this year’s celebrations, Council will also unveil four new inductees into the Maryborough Walk of Achievers – a unique tribute that honours local individuals who have made remarkable contributions across a range of fields.

“The Walk of Achievers features over 100 brass plaques embedded along Wharf and Richmond Streets in Maryborough’s heritage precinct, celebrating the achievements of poets, pioneers, inventors, athletes, environmentalists, and writers – including Pamela Travers, the beloved author of the Mary Poppins novels.”

This year’s new inductees are:

·       Dr Lyndal Kearney – Born in Maryborough in 1952, a globally respected leukemia researcher whose groundbreaking work in childhood leukemia has transformed treatment and prognosis worldwide.

·       Douglas Gordon – Born in Maryborough in 1911, a pioneering public health advocate who became Queensland’s first professor of social and preventative medicine.

·       Katrina Beikoff – Born in Maryborough in 1969, an award-winning journalist and author recognised for her investigative reporting and contributions to Australian media.

·       Arthur “Artie” Lambourn – Born in Maryborough in 1910, a celebrated All Blacks rugby player and World War II veteran known for his sporting excellence and community service in New Zealand.

A ceremony to welcome the new inductees will be held on Thursday 08 May at 11:15am in the Portside Precinct Courtyard, adjacent to the Bond Store.

“Council is proud to celebrate and preserve our region’s rich heritage and looks forward to welcoming the community to the local events for this year’s national festival,” Cr Seymour said.
