The highly anticipated 40th Annual Competitive Art Exhibition (ACAE) opens at the Hervey Bay Regional Art Gallery this week showcasing art from the Fraser Coast's best artists.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Arts spokesperson Michelle Govers said the exhibition was proudly displayed by the Hervey Bay Art Society and will showcase 166 creative artworks ranging from landscapes to abstract artworks from portraits to fauna.

“ACAE first began in 1983 and has become the largest community art competition in the region,” she said.

“This year ACAE has entries from local artists, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, and the Wide Bay-Burnett who can choose between six categories, attracting prize money ranging from $200 to $3,000.”

Cr Govers said the Fraser Coast had a rich and diverse range of artists covering a variety of painting styles, so expect to see an exciting exhibition as artists vie for just over $7,000 in prize money.

“Since its debut, the exhibition has only grown in strength, with 150 works displayed at previous events, this exhibition will be an incredible opportunity for residents to enjoy a variety of talent in one place,” she said.

Hervey Bay Art Society President Donna Stackman said the competitive art exhibition was an open competition and always attracts excellent artists.

“We are delighted to partner with the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery and Fraser Coast Regional Council to celebrate the 40th Annual Competitive Art Exhibition which showcases the diversity and depth of talent of both local artists and the wider art community,” she said.

Cr Govers said the Hervey Bay Art Society had been around for over 50 years, making them one of the longest running cultural organisations in the region.

“The Fraser Coast has a strong tradition of performing arts, visual arts, heritage, and cultural experiences,” she said.

“This exhibition is one not to be missed, and I encourage residents and visitors to take the opportunity to check it out while it is on display over the next six weeks.”

The winners will be revealed as part of the exhibition opening on Friday 26 July, 5:30pm – 7:30pm, with the artwork to be on display until 08 September 2024.

The Hervey Bay Regional Gallery is free to attend and is located at 166 Old Maryborough Road, Pialba.
