Callout for Artists - Mosaic Workshop
To help celebrate the history and 100th anniversary of the Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens, Fraser Coast Regional Council is seeking Expressions of Interest from creative community members to assist with the creation of a unique mosaic artwork to be installed on the reverse side of the entrance structure pergola at the Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens located at the corner of Kent and Tooley Streets, Maryborough.
A key method used to tell Maryborough’s stories is the production of artworks. The completed artwork will tell a key story identified as important to Maryborough’s Community.
The design is based on the layout of the rose garden bordered on the left and right by patterned sections containing stylised trees. The centre circle of the Rose Garden contains a feature pastiche of multi-coloured roses. The 6 circles surrounding the central rose feature will contain visual references to 6 (six) of the significant aspects in the history of the Garden. For example, these could be: Grave stone/s or ornamental fence, Children’s playground, Rotary Clubs, Paulen Park Nursery Rose - donation, Zonta Club and Maryborough Horticultural Society. The 6 (six) mosaic circular inserts will be created by community members, including invited representation from the groups depicted in the respective image, at a weekend mosaic workshop facilitated by professional mosaic artist Paul Perry. The mosaic circles will then be incorporated into the final mosaic piece and grouted before installation.
Ideally the community members should have some mosaic experience, or at least have the confidence to use manual tools and have some artistic exposure. The mosaic workshops to create the 6 (six) circular inserts will be run over the weekend of Friday 24 (Presentation), Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 June 2022 at Gatakers Creative Space, Maryborough. FCRC will source the community participants. Up to 12 people, plus a representative from each of the groups depicted in the respective image, would participate in the workshop.
Workshop Schedule:
Friday evening (6pm to 8.30pm): Presentation by Paul Perry on mosaics, the ‘rules’ of mosaicing and an introduction to the project. We will then review/refine the design for each circular insert, discuss the approaches to be taken to making each design, have a safety briefing, an introduction to mosaicing tools, their use and mosaicing techniques. The final part of the session will be hands-on, practicing cutting and shaping tesserae.
Saturday (9am to 4pm): Begin work on each of the panels. Breaks for morning tea and lunch etc.
Sunday (9am to 3pm): Complete panels and celebrate achievements. Breaks for morning tea and lunch etc.
Expressions of Interest close on Monday, 20 June at COB. Applicants are invited to provide their expression of interest by emailing gatakersartspace@frasercoast.qld.gov.au
This workshop is funded by the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), a partnership between the Queensland Government and Fraser Coast Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
