A Streetcar Named Desire is one of the most critically acclaimed plays of the 20th Century - opening on Broadway in 1947 with actors Jessica Tandy (Blanche), Marlon Brando (Stanley), Kim Hunter (Stella) and Karl Malden (Mitchell). The first London production, directed by Laurence Olivier, opened in 1949 with his wife Vivien Leigh as Blanche. Brando, Hunter and Malden reprised their Broadway roles for the controversial 1951 film adaptation, with Vivien Leigh joining them as Blanche. Leigh, Hunter and Malden all won Academy Awards for their roles – Marlon Brando missed out that year to Humphrey Bogart for The African Queen.
