The Glassery - Jo Bone, Lucy Quinn, Aaron Micallef, Jarred Wright & Christine Atkins
This exhibition showcases new works and propositions in the medium of glass.
The Glassery are five artists with independent, and occasionally collaborative, practices engaging with artisanal skills and new and old technology to create contemporary sculpture, design objects and installations. Together the group works to foster creative and innovative studio glass practice, share skills and a passion for the seductive medium. This exhibition will incorporate abstract sculpture, light installation, interdisciplinary sculpture and fine art and design objects.
Across the group, conceptual concerns vary with works that engage with abstraction, biodiversity, storytelling, sustainability and marine ecologies.
For this exhibition the Glassery will build on their previous self-titled exhibition toward a curatorial premise that investigates their contemporary and artisanal practice.
About the artists
Jo Bone
Joanna Studied Glass design at Wolverhampton University (Midlands, UK) and has a Masters Degree from the Royal College of Art (London, UK). On moving to Australia in 2002, Joanna found herself living alongside Queensland’s marine environment, the original home of some of her beloved shells. The colours, textures and forms found in this new environment have reinvigorated her interests in pattern, regularity and repetition. Today, Joanna Bone is one of Queensland’s foremost glass artists. Her work is internationally recognised and is held in prominent collections including the The National Gallery of Australia (Canberra), The Australian National Glass Collection (Wagga Wagga) and the Film Museum of Tehran, as well as numerous private collections around the world. Joanna is the only Queensland- based artist to have won the prestigious Ranamok Glass Prize for Australian and New Zealand artists and the respected Stanthorpe Art prize for 3D.
Lucy Quinn
Lucy is a Brisbane based artist and curator. Her multidisciplinary practice includes sculpture, video and kiln-cast lead crystal. She creates contemporary conceptual glass sculpture using traditional craft-based techniques. Themes of fluidity and light are explored through projection and reflection, and the solidity and static nature of cast glass objects. Lucy studied at Australian National University and has a Bachelor of Visual Arts, Honours First Class from the School of Art (2007) receiving the Peter & Lena Karmel award for the top-ranking student. In 2010 she received the National Museum of Australia Scholarship and completed her Master Degree in Liberal Arts (Museums and Collections), through the Australian National University Research School of Humanities and the Arts. Lucy has 20 years of experience working in the arts sector. This includes positions at the National Gallery of Australia, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Ipswich Art Gallery. Currently Lucy is Curator - Engagement, at Museum of Brisbane. Her experience in gallery-based access and learning has been focused on working with a wide range of audiences and audience focused programming.
Aaron Micallef
Aaron is based in Brisbane and was first introduced to hot glass about 20 years ago in the United Kingdom. There was a 10-year break from glass when he returned to Australia, after which he refreshed his skills and learnt new ones at the Canberra Glassworks. Aaron’s recent work has focused on engraving and surface, partly due to the long gaps in between hot-shop opportunities. His work in science, photography and drawing also wriggle their way into, and cross-fertilize, his glass work.
Jarred Wright
Jarred is a glass artist from Christchurch, Aotearoa, currently living in Meanjin (Brisbane), Australia. He is a scientific glass blower working in the chemistry, nano-technology and microbiology industry. He is influenced by the organic forms that arise in the imperceptible microcosm of nature and how the amorphous solid/fluid that is molten glass can accurately portray it.
Christine Atkins
Christine is a visual artist who makes bespoke works, primarily in glass. Christine graduated from the Australian National University with Honours in 2011.
